Serial Verb Constructions in Saudi Arabic

چکیده
Serial Verb Constructions have obvious implications for both descriptive and theoretical linguists (e.g., Newmayer, 2004; Aikhenvald & Dixon 2006; Haspelmath 2016). One fundamental question is whether the criteria of are universal (Déchaine 1993; Newmayer Muysken Veenstra 2006) or language-specific (Stewart 2001). This paper aims to investigate this debate by examining data from Saudi Arabic (Semitic language family), which has not been examined compared as a serializing code with other constructions in languages. Based on most noticeable features such facts, syntactic semantic features, present study concluded that + combinations could satisfy relevant Constructions.

Argument Composition in Korean Serial Verb Constructions ∗
The so-called serial verb construction (SVC) is a complex predicate structure consisting of two or more verbal heads but denotes one single event. This paper discusses the grammatical properties of Korean SVCs and provides a lexicalist, construction-based analysis couched in the typed-feature structure grammar, HPSG. In particular, we identify four different types of the SVCs in Korean, each of...

متن کاملConstructional Integration, Grammaticization, and Serial Verb Constructions
An important but under-appreciated aspect of grammar is the extent of the integration a grammatical construction specifies among its constitutive elements. Besides its vital role in synchronic grammar, this essential aspect of constructional meaning is a pivotal factor in grammaticization. These points will be illustrated through a variety of construction types drawn from a number of diverse la...
متن کاملA Serial Verb Construction without Constructions
This paper investigates the syntactic properties of Serial Verb Constructions (SVCs) consisting of two transitive verbs that seem to share a single direct object, as found in Edo, Nupe, and Yoruba. We claim these structures arise when one vP is adjoined to another vP and is predicated of it. This predication relationship is permitted if and only if the object of the second vP is a null pronomin...
متن کاملEnglish and Mandarin Serial or Non-serial Verb Constructions
This paper addresses serial verb constructions (SVCs) in English and Mandarin. Although Mandarin and English is different in the total number of SVC types, three so-called SVC types are found to be common across English and Mandarin: purposive SVCs (e.g. go eat); causative SVCs (e.g. I made him laugh); perceptive SVCs (e.g. I saw him laugh). This paper has demonstrated typical SVCs have unique ...
